Background

Bensen's profound connection with music began at the young age of four when he first discovered the piano. His siblings, Brian and Brenda, played an instrumental role in guiding him toward the world of percussion. This newfound love for music ignited a lifelong passion, inspiring him to pursue a career in the field. His involvement in various musical events, contests, and festivals, both in concert and marching bands, reinforced his determination to follow in the footsteps of the mentors who had inspired him. This unwavering commitment led him to apply to the University of Houston for a degree in music education.

Education

Bensen Kwan is a proud alumnus of the University of Houston, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. During his academic journey, he had the privilege of studying under the guidance of exceptional mentors, including Dr. Blake Wilkins, Professor Alec Warren, Dr. Craig Hauschildt, and Mr. Brian Stevens. Bensen's passion for music education also led him to explore international horizons, where he enriched his knowledge at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig, Germany, studying under the tutelage of renowned timpanist Stefan Rapp. Currently, he continues his musical journey as a student under the mentorship of Gene Koshinski and Tim Broscious at the University of Delaware.

Professional Journey and Achievements

Bensen's professional journey has been marked by remarkable experiences and accolades. His global music adventures include playing for the legendary Steve Reich at the So Percussion Summer Institute and receiving guidance from marimba virtuoso Theodor Milkov. He has also left his mark by contributing to the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra's film music recordings and performing at the prestigious Elbphilharmonie with the Junge Norddeutsche Philharmonie (Youth Northern Germany Philharmonic). His international education in Leipzig, Germany, under Stefan Rapp's mentorship, who serves as the timpanist for the Bremen Chamber Orchestra, further enriched his musical prowess.

  • Most recently, he made his concerto debut with the West Point Band and Army Field Band, mesmerizing the audience with Keiko Abe’s Prism Rhapsody.

Teaching Experience

Bensen's dedication to music extends to his teaching roles. He has shared his expertise through teaching private lessons and served as a front ensemble technician in Fort Bend, Katy, and Clear Creek ISD. As a testament to his commitment to music education, he successfully completed his student teaching assignments at Westbrook Intermediate School in Clear Creek ISD and Horn Elementary in Houston ISD, working closely with mentors Phillip Sammons and Jane Maloy.

Aspirations and Dreams

Bensen's ultimate aspiration is to establish himself as a full-time performer, gracing audiences with his music across the globe. He envisions his performances as platforms for meaningful discussions and a catalyst for promoting social equity. Bensen extends his heartfelt gratitude to his cherished friends and family who have provided unwavering emotional support throughout his remarkable journey. Outside of his musical pursuits, he enjoys longboarding, culinary experiments, and indulging in his passion for exploring obscure topics through YouTube, such as car detailing and furniture refurbishing.
